Stardate Sidebar: This is a late season two episode, however, due to the events of “The Gamesters of Triskelion”, I have placed it here to address a few episodes that are set during the events of that episode such as “Metamorphosis (stardate ~3219.8), “The City on the Edge of Forever” (stardate ~3270.5), and “Operation — Annihilate!” (stardate ~3287.17). Since this episode occurs entirely in 1968, we could reasonably assume that the Enterprise returns to Earth for repairs following “The Gamesters of Triskelion” and is assigned this time-travel research mission. Upon time-warping back to the future, they return before the events depicted in “The Gamesters of Triskelion,” and carry on with new missions.
With regards to the Gregorian calendar date, based on dialogue, the important assassination that happened in 1968 was that of Martin Luther King, Jr. on April 4th, and NASA launched the Apollo 6 Saturn V rocket which experienced technical issues, causing the craft to go off course after launch shortly after launch at 12:00 PM GMT. So, assuming these are the events Spock was referring to, we can establish the start day and time.
